The Right Tools for Better Stained Deck Results

When staining a deck or porch, it’s critical that you don’t underinvest in preparation. Many make the mistake of bypassing prep products and only investing in a high-quality stain. These contractors may save money off-the-shelf, but labor costs quickly add up once their team is struggling to get surfaces stain-ready.

Our CLEAN, BRIGHTEN, RESTORE, and REMOVE products are each formulated for a specific application—as an added value, they are also concentrates. A concentrated formula means that only a small amount goes a long way when mixed with water, and you can adjust the strength of your solution. Dealing with lots of mildew? Use a stronger mix of CLEAN to save time. Trying to remove light water stains? Use a weaker mix to save materials. After applying these high concentrate prep products, for best results, use a premium-quality stain, like our ARBORCOAT® Exterior Stain .

Save Time and Money by Investing in Deck Stain Preparation Concentrates

1 CLEAN off Stains from Mold and Mildew

CLEAN is a maintenance cleaner that safely removes stains from mold and/or as well as water stains. Plus, it is multipurpose and effective on siding, shakes, outdoor furniture and more.

For maximum strength cleaning, mix 1 gallon of CLEAN with 7 gallons of water for up to 2,400 square feet of coverage.

2 BRIGHTEN by Removing Tannin & Rust Stains

BRIGHTEN is used to break the shiny, tough-to-penetrate “mill glaze” on new wood and ensure deck stain adhesion. It also removes tannin and rust stains. Are you staining a tannin-bearing wood? BRIGHTEN counteracts the darkening effect of RESTORE and REMOVE by neutralizing the pH of those formulas.

BRIGHTEN rinses easily with water, and only 1 gallon of concentrate is needed to mix with 8 gallons of water for up to 2,400 square feet of coverage.

3 RESTORE Severely Weathered Wood

RESTORE is a gentle, bleach-free formula that quickly restores severely weathered and grayed wood decks to their natural colour. And, it prepares the deck’s surface for re-coating by removing tannin bleeding, discoloured surface fibre, and stains from mold and/or mildew.

For maximum strength, mix only 1 gallon of concentrate with 8 gallons of water for up to 2,400 square feet of coverage.

4 REMOVE Latex and Oil Finishes

REMOVE is a fast-acting formula for peeling oil or latex stain, varnish, and clear wood finishes. It also removes damaged and discoloured wood fibres to prepare the surface for recoating.

REMOVE may darken some wood types. If desired, use BRIGHTEN to restore the deck wood to its natural colour. Do not dilute REMOVE on surfaces with multiple coats, solid or semi-solid stains.

Follow this guide based on your customers’ wood conditions:

Weathered surfaces: mix 1 gallon of REMOVE with 1 gallon of water

Semi-transparent stains: mix 1 gallon of REMOVE with 2 gallons of water

Transparent stains: mix 1 gallon of remove with 3 gallons of water

Clear finishes: mix 1 gallon of REMOVE with 4 gallons of water

STEP 1: Prepare your surface

How To Paint with a Colour Wash Technique

Colour washing or glaze painting

Bring a more inviting look and feel to any room by using a technique known as colour washing or glaze painting. Benjamin Moore’s Studio Finishes® Latex Glaze (F405) is directly mixed with the paint colour of your choice to create the solution needed to colour wash walls and create a beautiful faux finish. Drawing from Tuscan roots, colour washed walls are ideal for dining rooms and other areas where guests will gather, and its decorative look will exude warmth and charm anyplace in your home.

One of the most elegant faux finishes that a do-it-yourselfer can create is a colour wash. This basic faux technique can add vibrancy, depth and visual interest to an otherwise plain wall. To create the technique, you simply apply a thin layer of glazing over your base coat of paint to give the surface a subtle layered effect. While it may seem easy, taking the time to perfect your technique can allow you to create gorgeous, one-of-a-kind effects for a focal wall, a ceiling or an entire room.

If you’ve never created a colour wash before, it’s a good idea practice on sample boards until you are comfortable with your technique and also to test your colours. Colour choice for the colour wash is critical. Typically, the basecoat is the brighter or darker of the two colours, with the more subtle colour on top, but you can reverse that if you want a more dramatic effect.

All the supplies you need to achieve a colour wash are available at Hannigan’s Paint & Decor.

Supplies Needed:

3-inch or 4-inch paint brush or soft rags/sponges
9-inch roller
Mini roller
Base Coat High-quality Satin sheen, like Regal® Select Interior or Aura® Interior Paint, in two or more paint colours,
Top Coat- and eggshell sheen to mix with the glaze
Studio Finishes® Latex Glaze(F405)
Disposable latex gloves
Drop cloth
Paint tray
Painter's tape
Water for cleanup

There are a variety of ways you can apply your colour wash. You can dip your rag into the glazing mixture, dabbing off the extra on paper towels, and then apply the mixture to the walls, using a circular motion. Our you can use a paintbrush, roller or mini-roller. Again, be sure to wipe off the excess and use short overlapping motions to apply the glaze to the wall. The more random your application, the better.

If you desire, you can even add a third layer with another topcoat colour mixed with the glazing liquid. This adds more depth and interest to the faux effect you are creating. You also can create interesting effects by using specialty tools such as brushes, combs or textured rollers. Consult with your local paint store for ideas on achieving the perfect colour wash for your home.

Step #1: Prepare Walls for Colour Washing

Surfaces must be properly prepared before you begin glaze painting walls. Clean your walls thoroughly and repair any protruding nails or other imperfections.

For best results, use Fresh Start® 100% Acrylic Primer (N023) before applying your base colour. Be sure to tape off any edges you wish to protect, such as those along ceilings, windows, and doors.

After you have prepared your walls, apply your selected base colour, taking care to follow the label directions. Allow the base colour ample time to dry. We suggest waiting at least 48 hours before moving on to the next step.

Step #2: Glaze Painting Your Walls

Once your base colour is dry, you can select the colour washing paint technique of your choice, using either a brush or rag/sponge. Begin by mixing Studio Finishes Latex Glaze with a latex or acrylic paint with an eggshell sheen to minimize glare. A good ratio to start with is four parts glaze to one part paint (adding an additional one-half to one part water will further the transparency of the glaze). The more glaze you add, the more transparent the effect. Using less glaze will allow more of the base colour to show through.

Next, dip a soft cloth or sea sponge into your glaze mixture. The soft cloth will give glaze a more subtle appearance, while sponge painting walls will give a more textured look.

Apply the glaze mixture to your wall using a crosshatch motion, creating large, overlapping X-shaped stripes. Continue this wiping technique until the entire surface is covered, and feather out any harsh brush strokes by lightly sweeping over the glaze with a clean, dry brush. For a gentler finish, apply the glaze in a random wiping or circular motion, as if you were washing the wall. Be sure to let the glaze dry thoroughly.

Tip: When you colour wash an entire room, glaze walls opposite from one another first. This will allow adequate time for drying and avoid smudging the wet glaze. Let dry for at least 4 hours. Remove the paper’s tape.

Step #3: Discover More Colour Wash Painting Techniques

There are different wall painting techniques that will make your colour washed walls stand out.

For different visual effects, vary your wiping motions as you apply the glaze.

To achieve the look of an aged patina, apply a lighter glaze over a darker glaze.

For a look with richer colour depth, glaze walls with different paint colours: a base colour, a glaze darker than your base paint colour, and a third deeper glaze colour.

Spring has sprung , which means it’s time to spruce up your exterior spaces. One of the easiest ways to achieve instant curb appeal is to add a pop of personality to your front door. Sharon Grech, Benjamin Moore Colour and Design Expert,

shares suggestions for painting your front door.

Embrace your inner style. The front door is a key focal point of your home, so let your personality shine. “It’s less about the architectural style of the house and more about making a personal statement about your style,” explains Grech. “Like a tie for a man’s suit, your front door can be daring, modern, traditional or classic. Really just have fun with it and make it a reflection of how you want to project your home’s personality.

Choose a fabulous colour. Choose a fabulous colour. “Since it’s a relatively small area compared to the rest of the house, you can afford to take risks and try new colours,” recommends Grech. “An interesting trend I’m spotting on front doors is using a pastel colour, like pink, coral or pale blue. This works especially well with a home clad in white or a pale neutral. Coral Spice 2170-40 and Venetian Sky are two of my favourites.” Just remember that dark coloured brick or stone can overwhelm a pale door. For darker coloured homes, choose bold shades. Grech recommends Benjamin Moore Aura® Grand Entrance, which is easy to apply and specifically formulated to retain colour integrity and gloss on exterior doors.

Let there be light. When selecting a front door colour, it is important to consider natural light. North-facing homes tend to attract cool light, and Grech recommends counter balancing this with warmer colours like Firenze AF-225. Conversely, for south-facing homes, the light will likely be warm and intense around noon and a mid-tone, such as Blue Echo AF-505, will look great throughout the day. Always view colour selections outside, to see the true effect of exterior lighting. This will help ensure your paint looks fresh throughout the day and rich in the evening.

Whether you decide to be bold with dark colours or prefer lighter hues, Grech suggests earthy tones tend to work well since they are so compatible with the natural elements of the great outdoors.

Bathrooms are generally small spaces and therefore painting one makes for an easy weekend project. While replacing tile and fixtures usually requires a professional, updating the bathroom with a fresh coat of paint is something anyone can do with a little time and preparation. It's no wonder bathrooms have replaced kitchens as the most frequently remodelled room in the house! Because bathrooms are exposed to high humidity and moisture it is important to choose paint that resists mildew and to prep the room properly. Here's a few tips:

CHOOSE THE RIGHT FINISH

For bathrooms, satin or pearl and semigloss paints have long been a natural choice because they are typically the easiest to clean and are formulated to stand up to stains. There are exceptions to this rule, such as specially-designed bathroom and spa paint that offers a beautiful matte finish yet resists mildew growth.

Keep in mind that stain and semigloss paints reflect light. This means they will not hide but accentuate any imperfections (e.g. seams, cracks) on the wall. Therefore, it is important to prep surfaces well and to put on primer before the paint.

BE COLOUR SMART

No window in the bathroom? Be aware that a lack of natural light can play tricks on your eyes when it comes to choosing bathroom paint colours. If your room only has overhead artificial light, view paint colour samples in the bathroom itself with the lights on. Otherwise, a sample that looks neutral in daylight can instantly appear peachy or mauve under a light fixture.

PREPARE PROPERLY

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of headache down the road, especially if it means repairing and repainting mistakes that could have been avoided the first time.

· Take any removable items out of the bathroom, including the shower curtain.

· Wash the walls. Mildew is sometimes invisible to the eye, but it can linger on the walls, bleed through new paint or prevent it from adhering properly. Before painting wipe the walls with TSP or a solution of I part bleach to 3 parts water. Rinse well with clean water and wait for them to dry completely before painting.

· Cover the bathtub, taps and shower or any other surfaces you don't want to get paint on. Apply a protective border of painter's tape around doors, windows, baseboards and vanity edges.

· Prime any new drywall or repairs with a good quality primer. You may need to prime the entire room if you have a lot of imperfections or your previous paint job was completed with an oil-based product.

PRO TIP:

Paint the ceiling first

Paint the ceiling first, then the walls. Begin by "cutting in" a corner of the ceiling with a paint brush, applying a 2” to 4" wide band of paint along the area where the ceiling meets the wall. Then you can go over the area with a paint roller to prevent visible lap marks.

Benjamin Moore Stonington Grey is a modern and fresh medium-toned grey with a slight blue undertone. It’s one of my favourite paint colours and I’ve used it throughout the home.

Stonington Grey (BM HC-170) is a beautiful medium grey with cool, blue undertones. It stays perfectly grey in most spaces unless it’s paired with a lot of white and cool (north facing ) light, where it can look a little blue. Both the picture above and the one below are really good true-to-life representations of the colour and allow you to see how it pairs with both white (the trim ) and woods tones (the picture frames).

Painted furniture can freshen up the look of any space—and you can easily change the colour to coordinate with a room's colour scheme.

Good candidates for painting are dressers, tables, bookcases, mirror frames, and non-upholstered chairs.

Choosing the Paint Colours for Your Furniture

Perhaps the most fun, creative part of painting your own furniture is choosing just the right hue to harmonize with the colour scheme of the room the piece will live in. Keep in mind that darker colours will appear larger and might overwhelm a small room.

Brighter colours and colours that contrast sharply with the walls and other furnishings will draw attention to a piece and make it the focus of the room, while lighter colours will help a piece blend in.

Preparing Surfaces for Painting

Preparing your furniture for painting is simple. Just follow these steps:

1. Rough Sanding: Start with a medium-grit sandpaper to remove traces of dirt and residues from polishing or waxing compounds, which may cause adhesion problems for the primer or paint.

2. Repairing: Next, repair cracks, joints that have expanded, and nail holes with a good wood-patching compound. After the compound has thoroughly dried, sand it down to make it even with the surrounding wood.

3. Fine Sanding: Using fine-grit sandpaper, emery cloth, or sanding block, lightly smooth the surface so that there are no drop-offs, or ledges, between sections of remaining finish and bare wood. Then wipe the entire surface with a damp, clean cloth to remove any remaining traces of dust and particles.

4. Priming: Unless you are repainting a previously painted piece, you should prime the surface, particularly when bare wood has been exposed. In some cases, spot priming will do. Benjamin Moore's Fresh Start® primers are an excellent choice.

Choosing the Right Paint

High-quality latex paints are easy to apply, easy to clean up after, and create a smooth finish. When painted with care, they generally require no more than one coat.

The type of finish will depend on whether your painted furniture will have a purely decorative function or a practical use. If the piece will be touched often, choose a protective gloss or semi-gloss finish that can be easily wiped clean. Our Regal® Select latex paint is ideal for these projects.

How to Paint Your Furniture

The actual painting is the simplest and easiest step in the process.

First, paint the larger, flat surfaces. Start near a corner, but not on the very edge, and work outward, brushing with the grain. Be sure to not overload your brush with paint. If you want a thicker coat, let the first coat dry before repainting rather than using too much paint the first time.

Continue by painting the edges and trim. If there is too much paint on the brush when you brush up to or over an edge, some of the paint might run over, so be especially careful and wipe any drips or overflow immediately with a clean, damp cloth.
Finally, all that's left to do is let it dry and enjoy the beautiful results!
